Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Coats dedicated his career to education, earning his doctorate in Educational Leadership and spending decades working in both traditional public schools and the emerging charter school movement.
In 1996, Dr. Coats founded The Leona Group with a simple but revolutionary idea: public charter schools could combine the accountability and accessibility of public education with the personalized attention typically found only in private schools.
A Different Kind of School
Dr. Coats was frustrated by what he saw in many traditional schools: overcrowded classrooms, one-size-fits-all curricula, and a lack of accountability. He envisioned schools where:
- Class sizes would be small enough for teachers to know every student by name
- Curriculum would be rigorous but adaptable to individual learning styles
- Parents would be true partners in their children's education
- Schools would be held accountable for results, not just intentions
- Every child would be challenged to reach their full potential
Building an Organization
What started as a single school in Michigan grew under Dr. Coats' leadership into a network of schools serving thousands of students across multiple states. He was deeply involved in every aspect of the organization, from curriculum development to teacher training to school design.
Dr. Coats was known for his hands-on approach. He regularly visited schools, knew many students and families by name, and was always accessible to teachers and staff. He believed that leadership meant service, and he led by example.
