English Learners

Supporting students on their journey to English proficiency

Welcome, English Learners!

At Leona Group Schools, we celebrate linguistic diversity and are committed to helping English Language Learners (ELLs) develop English proficiency while maintaining their home language and cultural identity.

Our English Language Development (ELD) programs are designed to help students acquire the English language skills they need to succeed academically while also participating meaningfully in all aspects of school life.

We understand that learning a new language takes time and support. Our trained teachers use research-based strategies to help students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English while also ensuring they have access to grade-level content.

Our ELL Programs

Comprehensive support tailored to each student's needs

Structured English Immersion (SEI)

Our primary model for English language instruction, SEI provides targeted language development within the regular classroom setting. Students receive instruction from teachers trained in SEI methodologies.

English Language Development

Dedicated time for focused English language instruction that addresses listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Lessons are tailored to students' current proficiency levels.

Small Group Instruction

Students receive additional support in small groups with specialized attention to their language development needs. This allows for differentiated instruction at each student's level.

Content Area Support

ELL students receive scaffolded instruction in all content areas (math, science, social studies) to ensure they can access grade-level curriculum while developing English skills.

Assessment & Placement

Ensuring appropriate support from day one

1

Home Language Survey

During enrollment, families complete a survey about languages spoken at home to identify potential ELL students.

2

Initial Assessment

Students identified as potential ELLs are assessed using the AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment) to determine their English proficiency level.

3

Program Placement

Based on assessment results, students are placed in appropriate ELD programs with services matched to their proficiency level.

4

Ongoing Monitoring

Student progress is monitored throughout the year, with annual AZELLA testing to measure growth and determine continued eligibility for services.

5

Reclassification

When students demonstrate English proficiency on the AZELLA, they are reclassified and transitioned out of ELL services with continued monitoring.

Important school documents can be translated into your home language. We also provide interpreters for parent-teacher conferences and school meetings.

We offer workshops and events specifically for ELL families to help you understand the school system, support your child's learning, and connect with other families.

Community Resources

Our staff can connect you with community resources including adult English classes, immigration services, and other family support programs.

At-Home Support

We provide tips and resources for supporting your child's English development at home while also maintaining your home language and culture.

Your Home Language Matters!

Research shows that maintaining a strong foundation in your home language actually helps children learn English more effectively. We encourage families to continue using their home language at home while children develop English at school.

Your Rights as an ELL Family

Federal and state laws protect the rights of English Language Learners and their families. As an ELL family, you have the right to:

  • Have your child identified and assessed for ELL services
  • Receive information about your child's ELL status and services in a language you understand
  • Participate in your child's education, including access to interpreters at school meetings
  • Decline or opt your child out of ELL services (though we recommend allowing your child to participate)
  • Know your child's English proficiency level and academic progress
  • Receive translated versions of important school documents
  • Access all school programs and activities regardless of English proficiency

If you have questions about your rights or your child's ELL services, please contact your school's ELL coordinator or our district ELL department.
